Searching Companies

Searching for lower insurance rates for your Subaru Legacy? Locating low-cost insurance for a new or used Subaru Legacy can be difficult, but you can use the following methods to make it easier.

There is a better way to shop for insurance so you’re going to learn the best way to compare rates on a Subaru and locate the best price possible from local insurance agents and online providers.

Comprehensive Insurance Coverage Comparison

Finding lower insurance coverage rates is a fairly straight forward process. All you need to do is invest a little time comparing price quotes online with multiple companies. This can be accomplished in just a few minutes using one of these methods.

The easiest and least time consuming way to get the best comparison quotes would be an industry-wide quote request form click to view form in new window. This form keeps you from doing repetitive form submissions for each company you want a rate for. Taking the time to complete one form gets you price quotes from several companies. Just one form and you’re done.

A less efficient way to compare prices is spending the time to visit each company’s website to complete their respective quote request forms. For examples sake, let’s say you want rates from Progressive, Farmers and GMAC. To get each rate you have to spend time on each company’s site to input your insurance information, which is why most consumers use the first method. For a handy list of car insurance company links in your area, click here.

The least efficient method of getting rate comparisons is to waste gas driving to different agent offices. Shopping for insurance coverage online eliminates the need for an insurance agent unless you want the trained guidance of a local agent. It is possible to compare online quotes but buy from a local insurance agent and we’ll cover that in a bit.

Which method you use is up to you, but ensure you are comparing identical information on every quote you get. If you use differing limits it will be very difficult to determine the best price for your Subaru Legacy.

Companies offer discounts so take them!

Insuring your fleet can be pricey, but discounts can save money and there are some available that you may not know about. Certain discounts will be triggered automatically when you purchase, but a few must be asked about before you will receive the discount. If you aren’t receiving every discount available, you’re paying more than you need to.

  • Good Student Discount – Getting good grades can earn a discount of 20% or more. The good student discount can last well after school through age 25.
  • Defensive Driver – Completing a defensive driving course can save you 5% or more if your company offers it.
  • Homeowners Savings – Being a homeowner may trigger a insurance policy discount because owning a home shows financial diligence.
  • Drivers Ed for Students – Cut your cost by having your teen driver take driver’s ed class if offered at their school.
  • Memberships – Affiliation with certain professional organizations could qualify you for a break on insurance for Legacy insurance.
  • Government Employees – Employees or retirees of the government can save as much as 8% for Legacy insurance with select insurance companies.
  • Life Insurance Discount – Select insurance companies reward you with a discount if you purchase life insurance.
  • Anti-theft Discount – Anti-theft and alarm systems are stolen less frequently and will save you 10% or more.

A little note about advertised discounts, most discount credits are not given to the entire policy premium. Most only cut the cost of specific coverages such as liability and collision coverage. Just because it seems like you can get free auto insurance, it just doesn’t work that way. Any amount of discount will reduce the amount you have to pay.

Companies who might offer these discounts may include but are not limited to:

  • State Farm
  • Liberty Mutual
  • The Hartford
  • MetLife
  • Progressive

Double check with each company which discounts they offer. Discounts might not apply in every state.

Do I just need basic coverages?

When it comes to choosing proper insurance coverage for your vehicles, there is no perfect coverage plan. Everyone’s needs are different.

These are some specific questions may help highlight if your insurance needs will benefit from professional help.

  • Am I missing any policy discounts?
  • What if I owe more than I can insure my car for?
  • When should I drop full coverage on my 1995 Subaru Legacy?
  • Should I carry comprehensive and collision coverage?
  • Do I really need UM/UIM coverage?
  • What is PIP insurance?
  • How high should deductibles be on a 1995 Subaru Legacy?
  • What exactly is covered by my policy?

If you can’t answer these questions but a few of them apply then you might want to talk to a licensed insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, complete this form. It’s fast, doesn’t cost anything and can provide invaluable advice.

The fine print in car insurance ads

Consumers can’t get away from ads for the lowest price auto insurance by companies like State Farm, Allstate and GEICO. They all make the same claim of big savings if you switch to them.

But how can every company make the same claim?

Insurance companies have a certain “appetite” for the type of customer that earns them a profit. A good example of a preferred risk could possibly be a mature driver, a clean driving record, and has a short commute. Any driver who fits that profile gets the lowest rates and as a result will probably save when switching.

Potential insureds who don’t qualify for the “perfect” profile will be charged more money and this can result in business going elsewhere. The ads state “people who switch” not “people who quote” save that much. That’s why insurance companies can confidently advertise the savings.

That is why drivers must get as many comparisons as possible. You cannot predict which insurance companies will fit your personal profile best.

Car insurance coverage information

Learning about specific coverages of your policy can be of help when determining the best coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. Policy terminology can be difficult to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording.

Comprehensive auto insurance

Comprehensive insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage that is not covered by collision coverage. A deductible will apply and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive can pay for claims like theft, damage from flooding and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low it’s not worth carrying full coverage.

Liability coverage protects you from damages or injuries you inflict on other’s property or people by causing an accident. Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You might see policy limits of 100/300/100 which means $100,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, $300,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Alternatively, you may have one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which limits claims to one amount without having the split limit caps.

Liability coverage pays for things such as bail bonds, attorney fees and pain and suffering. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is up to you, but buy as high a limit as you can afford.

Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. This coverage pays for hospital bills for your injuries as well as your vehicle’s damage.

Since a lot of drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage is very important. Usually your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.

Collision coverage protection

This coverage pays for damage to your Legacy resulting from colliding with another car or object. A deductible applies then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.

Collision insurance covers claims such as backing into a parked car, sustaining damage from a pot hole, colliding with another moving vehicle, crashing into a building and rolling your car. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also increase the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.

Coverage for medical expenses

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage reimburse you for expenses for things like pain medications, EMT expenses, funeral costs and prosthetic devices. They can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance plan or if you are not covered by health insurance. Medical payments and PIP cover both the driver and occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal injury protection coverage is not an option in every state and may carry a deductible

Save your cold hard cash

We just covered a lot of ways to lower your 1995 Subaru Legacy insurance rates. The key concept to understand is the more companies you get rates for, the better likelihood of reducing your rate. You may even find the lowest priced insurance comes from a small mutual company.

As you shop your coverage around, never skimp on critical coverages to save a buck or two. There have been many situations where an accident victim reduced comprehensive coverage or liability limits only to regret at claim time they didn’t have enough coverage. Your focus should be to purchase a proper amount of coverage at the best price while not skimping on critical coverages.

The cheapest insurance can be purchased both online and also from your neighborhood agents, so you should be comparing quotes from both to have the best rate selection. There are still a few companies who may not provide online price quotes and usually these smaller companies provide coverage only through local independent agents.
