Comprehensive Insurance Coverage Comparison

All the larger insurance coverage companies like Progressive, GEICO, Allstate and State Farm provide coverage price quotes on their websites. Getting online quotes doesn’t take a lot of time as you just enter the amount of coverage you want as detailed in the form. Upon sending the form, the system makes automated requests for credit information and your driving record and returns a price based on these factors. This makes it a lot easier to compare rates but the work required to visit a lot of sites and complete many quote forms is repetitive and time-consuming. But it is imperative to have as many quotes as possible if you are searching for the lowest price.

Which insurance is the “right” coverage?

When buying the best auto insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is not a perfect coverage plan. Your needs are not the same as everyone else’s so your insurance should reflect that For example, these questions may help you determine if your situation could use an agent’s help.

  • Do I need medical payments coverage since I have good health insurance?
  • Does insurance cover damages from a DUI accident?
  • Is my 2008 Volkswagen GTI covered for smoke damage?
  • Are rock chip repairs covered?
  • Should I buy full coverage?
  • If my pet gets injured in an accident are they covered?
  • Do I need an umbrella policy?
  • Will I lose any money if I cancel my policy before it expires?

If you’re not sure about those questions but a few of them apply, you might consider talking to a licensed insurance agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area.

Auto insurance coverages 101

Knowing the specifics of auto insurance aids in choosing which coverages you need for your vehicles. Policy terminology can be impossible to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy. These are typical coverages available from auto insurance companies.

Coverage for collisions

This coverage will pay to fix damage to your GTI caused by collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. You will need to pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the remainder.

Collision coverage pays for things like backing into a parked car, sustaining damage from a pot hole and sideswiping another vehicle. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from older vehicles. Another option is to bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.

UM/UIM (Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist) coverage

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants and damage to your Volkswagen GTI.

Since a lot of drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked.

Auto liability

This protects you from damage or injury you incur to other’s property or people in an accident. It protects you against claims from other people, and does not provide coverage for your own vehicle damage or injuries.

It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have liability limits of 50/100/50 which means a $50,000 limit per person for injuries, $100,000 for the entire accident, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property.

Liability can pay for claims like court costs, medical services, structural damage and bail bonds. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a personal decision, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.

Comprehensive auto coverage

Comprehensive insurance will pay to fix damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.

Comprehensive can pay for things like hitting a bird, a broken windshield and damage from flooding. The most you’ll receive from a claim is the actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider dropping full coverage.

Medical payments and PIP coverage

Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for bills like rehabilitation expenses, funeral costs and X-ray expenses. They can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants as well as any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is only offered in select states and may carry a deductible
