  • How much can I save by bundling my policies?
  • Is a blown tire covered by insurance?
  • Is my dog or cat covered if injured in an accident?
  • How high should my uninsured/underinsured coverage be in my state?
  • Do I need rental car coverage?

Specific coverages for a 2013 Lexus LX 570

Understanding the coverages of your policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage and proper limits and deductibles. Policy terminology can be ambiguous and nobody wants to actually read their policy.

Medical expense insurance

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for short-term medical expenses like ambulance fees, dental work, surgery, doctor visits and rehabilitation expenses. They are used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance program or if you do not have health coverage. They cover all vehicle occupants and will also cover being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal Injury Protection is not available in all states but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage

Collision protection

This coverage pays for damage to your LX 570 resulting from a collision with another car or object. You first must pay a deductible then your collision coverage will kick in.

Collision insurance covers claims like colliding with a tree, hitting a mailbox, hitting a parking meter and crashing into a ditch. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so consider removing coverage from older vehicles. You can also choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Comprehensive (Other than Collision)

Comprehensive insurance coverage will pay to fix damage OTHER than collision with another vehicle or object. You first must pay your deductible then your comprehensive coverage will pay.

Comprehensive insurance covers things such as fire damage, damage from a tornado or hurricane, a broken windshield, damage from flooding and vandalism. The most you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the market value of your vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider removing comprehensive coverage.

Liability coverages

Liability coverage can cover damage or injury you incur to other’s property or people by causing an accident. This insurance protects YOU against claims from other people. It does not cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.

Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. You commonly see policy limits of 100/300/100 which stand for $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $300,000, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property.

Liability can pay for claims like repair bills for other people’s vehicles, bail bonds, repair costs for stationary objects, structural damage and legal defense fees. How much coverage you buy is a personal decision, but consider buying as much as you can afford.

Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers

This provides protection when the “other guys” are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. This coverage pays for hospital bills for your injuries and damage to your Lexus LX 570.

Since a lot of drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked.
