Searching Companies

Confused by the crazy number of insurance coverage companies? Many other consumers are too. There are so many choices that it can be a challenge to locate the lowest price.

Smart consumers take time to get comparison quotes every six months because rates tend to go up over time. If you had the best deal on Cooper insurance a couple years back you can probably find a lower rate today. So just ignore everything you know about insurance coverage because you’re going to get a crash course in the things you must know in order to properly buy coverages and cut your premium.

How to Compare Auto Insurance Rates

Shopping for lower auto insurance rates can take hours if you don’t understand the fastest way to get free quotes. You could spend your day talking about coverages with agents in your area, or you could save time and use online quotes to get rate comparisons in just a few minutes.

Many of the larger companies are enrolled in a marketplace where insurance shoppers only type in their quote data once, and each company returns a competitive quote based on the submitted data. This system prevents you from having to do quote requests to each company.

The one disadvantage to pricing coverage this way is you are unable to specify which insurance companies to get quotes from. If you prefer to choose specific providers to compare prices, we have a listing of the cheapest auto insurance companies in your area. Click here for list of insurance companies.

It’s your choice how you get your quotes, but compare apples-to-apples coverage limits for each comparison quote. If you enter higher or lower deductibles it’s not possible to find the best deal for your MINI Cooper. Quoting even small variations in limits can result in a big premium difference. It’s important to know that more quotes provides better odds of finding lower pricing.

Don’t miss these eight discounts

Properly insuring your vehicles can get expensive, but discounts can save money and there are some available to help offset the cost. Certain discounts will be triggered automatically at the time of purchase, but less common discounts must be inquired about prior to getting the savings.

  • Auto/Life Discount – Select insurance companies reward you with better rates if you take out auto and life insurance together.
  • Low Mileage – Driving fewer miles can qualify you for better rates on cars that stay parked.
  • Military Rewards – Having a family member in the military could mean lower rates.
  • Homeowners Discount – Simply owning a home may earn you a small savings because owning a home demonstrates responsibility.
  • Anti-lock Brake System – Vehicles equipped with ABS or steering control can avoid accidents and therefore earn up to a 10% discount.
  • Seat Belt Usage – Drivers who require all occupants to use their safety belts could cut 10% or more off your PIP or medical payments premium.
  • Bundle and Save – If you have multiple policies with the same company you may earn up to 20% off your total premium.
  • New Car Discount – Buying coverage on a new vehicle can save up to 30% due to better safety requirements for new cars.

A little note about advertised discounts, most discounts do not apply the whole policy. Most cut individual premiums such as medical payments or collision. Even though it may seem like you would end up receiving a 100% discount, you’re out of luck. Any amount of discount will cut the amount you have to pay.

Companies that may have these benefits are:

Double check with each insurance company which discounts they offer. All car insurance discounts might not apply in your state.

When might I need help?

When it comes to buying the right insurance coverage for your personal vehicles, there really is no best way to insure your cars. Everyone’s situation is a little different.

For example, these questions might help in determining if your insurance needs will benefit from professional help.

  • I don’t drive much so do I pay less?
  • Do I need PIP (personal injury protection) coverage in my state?
  • Will filing a claim cost me more?
  • Does car insurance cover theft of personal property?
  • Can I afford to buy a different vehicle if my 2015 MINI Cooper is totaled?
  • Are split liability limits better than a combined single limit?
  • Does my 2015 MINI Cooper qualify for pleasure use?
  • Can I drive in Mexico and have coverage?
  • Is my custom paint covered by insurance?
  • Should I sign the liability waiver when renting a car?

If it’s difficult to answer those questions but you know they apply to you, you might consider talking to an agent. If you want to speak to an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form.

Parts of your auto insurance policy

Learning about specific coverages of your policy aids in choosing the right coverages for your vehicles. The coverage terms in a policy can be ambiguous and nobody wants to actually read their policy.

Liability coverages

This protects you from injuries or damage you cause to other people or property in an accident. It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. You might see liability limits of 25/50/25 which stand for $25,000 bodily injury coverage, $50,000 for the entire accident, and a total limit of $25,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Alternatively, you may have one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which combines the three limits into one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.

Liability insurance covers claims such as repair bills for other people’s vehicles, structural damage, legal defense fees and repair costs for stationary objects. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is your choice, but buy as much as you can afford.

Coverage for collisions

Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. A deductible applies then your collision coverage will kick in.

Collision insurance covers things like sustaining damage from a pot hole, crashing into a ditch and rolling your car. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also increase the deductible to bring the cost down.

Comprehensive auto insurance

This coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive insurance covers claims such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, falling objects and a broken windshield. The highest amount you can receive from a comprehensive claim is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.

Coverage for medical expenses

Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for immediate expenses such as doctor visits, X-ray expenses and rehabilitation expenses. They are utilized in addition to your health insurance policy or if you are not covered by health insurance. It covers all vehicle occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not universally available but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage

Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers

Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. It can pay for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.

Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is important protection for you and your family. Usually the UM/UIM limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.
