Searching Companies

Want lower car insurance rates for your Kia Optima? Wish you could get out of an underperforming, overpriced car insurance policy? Don’t feel bad because many consumers are in the same pinch. Big-name insurance companies like Progressive, GEICO and Farmers Insurance continually bombard you with TV and radio ads and consumers find it hard to ignore the promise of big savings and take the time to shop coverage around.

It’s a good idea to shop coverage around before your next renewal because car insurance prices are usually higher with each renewal. Despite the fact that you may have had the lowest rates for Optima insurance two years ago the chances are good that you can find a lower premium rate today. Ignore everything you know about car insurance because you’re about to learn the easiest way to reduce your cost while improving coverage.

How much is insurance?

Effectively comparing insurance prices can be a daunting task if you don’t understand the most efficient way. You can spend your afternoon discussing policy coverages with insurance agencies in your area, or you could save time and use the internet to accomplish the same thing much quicker.

Many insurance companies participate in a marketplace where prospective buyers only type in their quote data once, and at least one company returns a competitive quote based on the submitted data. This system prevents you from having to do form submissions for each company you want a rate for.

To enter your information into the quoting system, enter your zip code here.

The one disadvantage to getting quotes like this is you don’t know exactly the insurers you want to price. If you prefer to choose from a list of companies to request quotes from, we have assembled a list of companies who write insurance in your area. Click to enter zip code for insurance companies.

You can choose any of those ways to find more affodable coverage, but do your best to enter apples-to-apples coverages and limits for every quote you compare. If you use mixed coverages it will be nearly impossible to truly determine the lowest rate.

Don’t assume everyone needs the same car insurance coverage

When it comes to buying the right insurance coverage, there isn’t really a cookie cutter policy. Your needs are not the same as everyone else’s and your policy should reflect that. For instance, these questions may help you determine if you might need professional guidance.

  • How do I file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
  • Is my state a no-fault state?
  • Can I get a multi-policy discount for packaging my home and auto coverage?
  • How much underlying liability do I need for an umbrella policy?
  • Do I really need UM/UIM coverage?
  • Can I pay claims out-of-pocket if I buy high deductibles?
  • How can I get high-risk coverage after a DUI?
  • Is business equipment covered while in my vehicle?
  • Am I covered when driving in Canada or Mexico?

If it’s difficult to answer those questions, you might consider talking to a licensed insurance agent. To find lower rates from a local agent, fill out your zip code. It is quick, free and you can get the answers you need.

Car insurance coverage information

Knowing the specifics of a car insurance policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage and the correct deductibles and limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be impossible to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Listed below are the usual coverages available from car insurance companies.

Coverage for liability

This protects you from damage or injury you incur to a person or their property. It protects YOU from legal claims by others. Liability doesn’t cover your injuries or vehicle damage.

Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have limits of 50/100/50 that means you have $50,000 in coverage for each person’s injuries, a limit of $100,000 in injury protection per accident, and property damage coverage for $50,000. Another option is one number which is a combined single limit that pays claims from the same limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.

Liability can pay for things such as medical services, loss of income and funeral expenses. How much coverage you buy is up to you, but consider buying as large an amount as possible.

Medical expense insurance

Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance pay for expenses such as EMT expenses, dental work and hospital visits. They can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance plan or if you lack health insurance entirely. It covers not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants in addition to getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not an option in every state and may carry a deductible

Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers

This protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other drivers when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.

Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Most of the time the UM/UIM limits are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.

Comprehensive (Other than Collision)

This pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive coverage pays for things like hitting a deer, hitting a bird and theft. The maximum payout your car insurance company will pay is the ACV or actual cash value, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.

Collision protection

Collision coverage covers damage to your Optima resulting from a collision with an object or car. You have to pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.

Collision coverage pays for things like hitting a mailbox, colliding with a tree, colliding with another moving vehicle and rolling your car. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so you might think about dropping it from vehicles that are older. You can also raise the deductible to bring the cost down.
