Keep in mind that more quotes will enable you to find better pricing.

How to know if you need help

When choosing coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no perfect coverage plan. Each situation is unique so your insurance should reflect that For example, these questions may help highlight if you might need professional guidance.

  • Should I get collision insurance on every vehicle?
  • Is my cargo covered for damage or theft?
  • Where can I find DUI or SR-22 insurance?
  • Do I need an umbrella policy?
  • What is no-fault insurance?
  • Does my policy cover me when driving someone else’s vehicle?

If you can’t answer these questions but a few of them apply, you might consider talking to a licensed agent. If you don’t have a local agent, take a second and enter your zip code.

Auto insurance coverages

Having a good grasp of your auto insurance policy helps when choosing the right coverages and proper limits and deductibles. Auto insurance terms can be confusing and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Below you’ll find the usual coverages available from auto insurance companies.

Liability

Liability coverage provides protection from injuries or damage you cause to other people or property in an accident. It protects YOU against claims from other people, and does not provide coverage for damage to your own property or vehicle.

Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have values of 100/300/100 that means you have $100,000 bodily injury coverage, $300,000 for the entire accident, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property.

Liability insurance covers claims such as repair bills for other people’s vehicles, emergency aid, pain and suffering and medical services. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is up to you, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.

Comprehensive auto insurance

This will pay to fix damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. A deductible will apply and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive insurance covers claims like hail damage, fire damage, a tree branch falling on your vehicle, falling objects and a broken windshield. The most a auto insurance company will pay at claim time is the market value of your vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value consider removing comprehensive coverage.

Collision coverage

This pays for damage to your Prius from colliding with another car or object. A deductible applies and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.

Collision coverage pays for things such as hitting a parking meter, damaging your car on a curb, driving through your garage door, sustaining damage from a pot hole and crashing into a ditch. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from lower value vehicles. It’s also possible to increase the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.

Coverage for medical expenses

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for immediate expenses like nursing services, ambulance fees, EMT expenses, surgery and prosthetic devices. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if there is no health insurance coverage. They cover both the driver and occupants and will also cover any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal Injury Protection is not universally available but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage

Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers

This coverage protects you and your vehicle from other motorists when they do not carry enough liability coverage. Covered claims include injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.

Since many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is a good idea.
