What are anti-lock brakes?
One of the most gut-wrenching sensations as a driver is having to stop on a dime and multiple that times ten if the roads are slippery or you’re in traffic. Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) were a major breakthrough in braking safety.
In a nutshell, Anti-lock braking systems stop your wheel from skidding. Imagine trying to stop on a patch of ice or wet leaves, and your tires lose traction. The wheels are spinning but aren’t making significant contact with the road. That’s because the contact patch is sliding on the surface instead of creating friction. ABS solves this problem by reducing and/or preventing traction loss, allowing you to steer while you stop.
The parts of ABS include:
- Speed sensors
- Pump
- Valves
- Controller
There are 3 types of Anti-Lock Brake Systems:
- Four-channel, four-sensor ABS
- Three-channel, three-sensor ABS
- One-channel, one-sensor ABS
