What is an anti-theft device?

Car anti-theft can be a critical component of keeping your car safe. These types of devices typically fall into two categories — factory-installed and after factory installations.

One of the most essential anti-theft devices is just common sense. Don’t leave wallets, keys, electronics in plain sight in your vehicle, and always make sure to lock your doors.

Now, other anti-theft devices fall into three categories:

Warning Devices

Warning devices are an added barrier to a thief stealing your car. Most thieves want to get in and out unnoticed. Suppose your car starts making a ton of noise that’s not good for the thief. Most newer vehicles have warning devices built-in. Remember, the louder and more obnoxious the noise, the better.

A couple of other items that you may not think of as warning devices are a steering wheel or tire lock. These are an immediate red flag for thieves — “I’m not worth your time.”

Immobilizing Devices

Immobilizers are a critical element of passive anti-theft systems. These devices stop the current from the starter, ignition, and fuel pump. These systems don’t work, and the thief isn’t going anywhere.

Some of the most common immobilizers include:

  • smart keys
  • kill switches
  • wireless authentication
  • fuse disablers

Tracking Devices

Tracking devices are preventative as a warning system that the car can be easily located if stolen, but they deserve their own category as well.

Global positioning systems (GPS) and wireless technologies allow monitoring services to locate the stolen vehicle and share that information with the police. The most common is probably OnStar.

None of these anti-theft tips are fools proof. The smarter we make our anti-theft devices, the more creative thieves become to counter-act them. But these are a significant first step in keeping your car safe, and they’ll save you money on car insurance. Win-win.
