Usage-based discounts are a great way to get cheap car insurance. Your Nationwide SmartRide car insurance rates are determined by how well you rate on several factors.

What is Nationwide SmartRide?
Nationwide SmartRide tracks four specific factors for four to six months to determine your discount. These factors are:
- How much you drive
- Hard braking and acceleration
- Idle time
- Nighttime driving
You can’t get a Nationwide SmartRide car insurance quote because these factors are rated and determine how much you save.
You will get an initial 10% discount just for signing up for the SmartRide, and an additional discount of up to 40% based on your driving. Your discount is good for the life of your policy and can’t be re-evaluated.
Any Nationwide customer, whether new or renewing, is eligible for the program. You can also combine these savings with a safe driver car insurance discount.
SmartRide tracks your driving in two different ways. There is a plug-in device that can be used or an app can be downloaded to your phone.
The plug-in device is the least common, although Nationwide SmartRide device installation is quite easy. It simply plugs into a port in your dash.
The SmartRide app is the more popular way to participate in the program. Once downloaded, the app runs in the background on your phone.
Keep in mind, the app does use data so you need to be aware of your data plan. Also, there can be some privacy concerns since your data is recorded, but Nationwide says they don’t share the information.
Is Nationwide SmartRide worth it?
Nationwide SmartRide car insurance can save you money if you score well on certain factors.
Your rates won’t increase if you don’t score well, making this an easy way to find affordable Nationwide SmartRide car insurance.
SmartRide will also make you safer. According to the Insurance Information Institute, telematics programs make you a safer driver since you get immediate feedback about bad driving habits.
It should also be noted that Nationwide SmartMiles is a different program. SmartMiles is a program that allows you to only pay for the miles you drive. You pay a small base fee every month plus a few cents a mile.
SmartMiles uses a device to track the miles you drive. You can access your account and make payments through the Nationwide SmartMiles app.
The Nationwide SmartRide car insurance company isn’t the only program out there that can save you money. Enter your ZIP code now to compare car insurance rates for multiple companies for free.
