How well do driving apps works?

Driving Devices and apps are the latest insurance technologies, but not without problems as some report being tracked as a passenger in another vehicle or even when on a plane.

There are even companies like Root that only offer insurance through the use of a driving device or app. 10 percent of drivers are using some kind of driving device or app.

The other concern for driver apps is privacy. Some think they may be working too well and are ripe for security breaches or for companies to eventually sell all that juicy data about where you shop, eat out, and more to third party companies.

Before choosing a driving device or app, we recommend asking your provider about:

  • How does the data affect your rates? Ask them to be specific
  • Can you decline to share some information without being penalized?
  • Will the company sell or share your data? Maybe they don’t now but be sure there are no clauses allowing them to later without informing you explicitly.
