How does the size and class of the Kia Rondo affect liability car insurance rates?

We’ve mentioned liability insurance, but we haven’t fully explained what liability coverage covers, as liability coverage is made up of two different parts designed to protect you if you cause an accident. Bodily injury liability will pay for the other driver’s medical bills, while property damage liability will pay for the other driver’s vehicle repair costs. Watch the video below for more information about liability insurance.

So how exactly does the size and class of your vehicle affect liability rates? Simply put, if you have a large vehicle that rams through other vehicles in a crash, there will be more damage to others than to yourself. The plus side to this, of course, is that you will be safer in a vehicle that inflicts damage rather than being the vehicle crumpled on the side of the road.

The Kia Rondo is classified as a small minivan. Model years were made from 2007 to 2010, and Kia hasn’t brought it back since then. We want to make sure that Kia Rondo wasn’t discontinued because of major issues, so we are going to take a look at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) insurance losses by make and model.

  • Kia Rondo Property Damage Liability Loss: -10 percent
  • Kia Rondo Bodily Injury Liability Loss: -19 percent

Both of these liability losses are average among small minivans. A negative loss is always a good indicator, as means insurers have paid out only a few claims (or none) for that vehicle model. So owners of Kia Rondo may see a lower rate on their liability insurance compared to other cars they’ve owned.

What does liability insurance cost for a Kia Rondo?

To give you an idea of what you’ll be paying for liability insurance on your Kia Rondo, we went ahead and collected rate data from Geico. Our sample quote was based on a 40-year-old male driver in Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree, a clean driving record, and a full coverage policy (with a $500 deductible). Our sample driver owns his vehicle and travels an average of 13,000 miles a year.

Take a look at the bodily injury costs below for six-month premiums. We’ve collected rates for three different coverage levels.

  • Low ($15,000/$30,000): $36.96
  • Medium ($100,000/$200,000): $75.77
  • High ($500,000/$500,000): $121.97

If you upgrade from low to high bodily injury coverage on your Kia Rondo, it will cost you about $85, or $14 a month. This isn’t too bad. The increases for property damage liability rates are fairly low too, as you can see from the list below.

  • Low ($5,000): $437.35
  • Medium ($20,000): $466.70
  • High ($100,000): $488.14

The upgrade from low to high property damage liability only costs $51, which is less than $10 a month. So if you own a Kia Rondo, you can get the best property damage and bodily injury liability protection possible for only an average of $22 a month. Paying a little extra each month will prevent huge accident bills in the future.

What are the safety features and ratings of the Kia Rondo?

Quite a few car commercials focus on the safety features of a car, especially when the commercial subject is a parent letting their teenager drive off for the first time. However, it’s not just teens that benefit from safety features like collision avoidance and backup cameras. Any driver can use these features to help them drive safer, which is why insurers love safety features.

Watch the video below to learn about some of the highlights of the Kia Rondo, such as quick braking and fog lights.

Insurers will look for any features that help prevent crashes, protect drivers in crashes, or prevent theft. The more features there are on your vehicle, the better the discount. According to AutoBlog.com, the safety features on a 2009 Kia Rondo are:

  • Crash prevention: anti-lock brakes and stability control.
  • Crash protection: front-impact airbags, side-impact airbags, overhead airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and anti-whiplash headrests.
  • Theft prevention: ignition disable device.

The Kia Rondo has some great safety features. It has multiple airbags (including overhead), which are vital in a crash and aren’t always included in cars. It also has anti-lock brakes and stability control, which can help prevent skidding and hydroplaning. Insurers will take all of these features into consideration when they calculate your discount.

In addition to safety features, the crash rating of a vehicle is also important to insurers. While the IIHS did a crash test on the 2010 Kia Rondo, the test only focused on the crashworthiness of the head restraints and seats, which the IIHS rated as good (the highest rating). This is great, and it may result in insurers taking a bit off your premium.

Do you know which cars are cheapest to insure? Insurers will also look at the overall fatalities of different vehicle types to determine rates (small minivans are classified as cars on the IIHS’s fatality study by vehicle type). The IIHS found that in 2018, there were 48 driver car deaths per million vehicles. This is higher than driver deaths for both pickups (34 per million vehicles) and SUVs (23 per million vehicles).

The death rates are also higher for cars for all occupant deaths. In 2018, there were 69 car deaths per million vehicles, compared to 32 SUV deaths and 42 pickup deaths. Since cars have the highest number of fatalities, we want to take a look at the IIHS’s 2018 data on fatalities by crash type for cars.

  • Frontal Impact: 7,433 fatalities
  • Side Impact: 3,568 fatalities
  • Rear Impact: 834 fatalities
  • Other (mostly rollovers): 1,303 fatalities

The various crash types make up a total of 13,138 fatalities and also show that frontal impacts and side impacts are the most dangerous in cars. The total number of car fatalities is also very high compared to the total SUV fatalities (5,035) and pickup fatalities (4,369).

While the higher number of car fatalities is likely partially due to ownership, as fewer people have SUVs and pickups. Because insurers look at these numbers, however, better safety ratings on your car will help lower insurance ratings.

What is the MSRP of the Kia Rondo?

You may have seen MSRP before, whether it’s tagged on your car or your new pair of shoes. MSRP means the manufacturer suggested retail price, and it is what sellers will base their final price on. Sellers usually won’t sell a car at the MSRP price and will mark down the price. Still, a high MSRP means a more expensive price.

Kelley Blue Book (KBB) doesn’t list the MSRP price of the Kia Rondo (as it is an older car), but KBB does list the following prices for a 2010 Kia Rondo:

  • Fair Market Price Range: $3,893 to $6,426
  • Typical Listing Price: $5,581

The fair market price is usually a few thousand dollars less than the MSRP, so the MSRP for a 2010 Kia Rondo is likely around $9,000. What the MSRP is set as will affect both your collision and comprehensive rates, as high MSRPs mean more expensive repair parts.

Since collision and comprehensive insurance both pay to repair your vehicles, insurers will raise prices if the MSRP is high. You may also be forced to carry collision and comprehensive insurance if you lease a car with a high MSRP, as your lender doesn’t want a huge loss if you total or wreck your car.

The insurance losses for collision and comprehensive insurance will also affect your rates, in addition to a high MSRP, as multiple claims paid out on a vehicle model is a red flag to insurers. While the IIHS doesn’t have losses recorded for the Kia Rondo, the overall collision and comprehensive losses for small minivans are average or good.

Since insurers will have to look at overall losses whenever there isn’t data for a specific vehicle, this is good news. High losses mean insurers will charge more, especially if there is also a high MSRP on a vehicle. Since the Kia Rondo has a lower MSRP and the losses for small minivans are fairly good, you shouldn’t see a drastic change in your comprehensive and collision rates.

Now that you’ve reached the end of our guide to the Kia Rondo, you should have a better understanding of how to reduce your rates. We hope you are ready to start shopping around for cheap car insurance on your Kia Rondo. Enter your ZIP code in our free tool to get started.
