Having to pay for overpriced Ford Explorer Sport Trac insurance can drain your personal savings, especially in this economy. Comparing price quotes is free and is an excellent way to cut your insurance bill.

Online insurance companies like State Farm, Farmers Insurance, GEICO and Allstate constantly blast consumers with advertising and consumers find it hard to ignore the promise of big savings and find the best price available.

If you currently have car insurance, you should be able to save some money using this strategy. Finding affordable coverage is not that difficult. But drivers can benefit from knowing the way companies sell online and take advantage of how the system works.

Take discounts and save

Insuring your fleet can be pricey, but you may find discounts that you may not even be aware of. Larger premium reductions will be automatically applied at quote time, but a few need to be manually applied prior to getting the savings.

  • Drive Safe and Save – Insureds without accidents may save up to 50% more for Explorer Sport Trac insurance than less cautious drivers.
  • Pay Now and Pay Less – If you pay your bill all at once instead of paying each month you may reduce your total bill.
  • Federal Government Employee – Active or retired federal employment could cut as much as 10% off for Explorer Sport Trac insurance depending on your company.
  • Driver’s Ed – Require your teen driver to take driver’s ed class in high school.
  • Theft Prevention Discount – Cars that have factory anti-theft systems prevent vehicle theft and qualify for as much as a 10% discount.
  • Multi-car Discount – Insuring more than one vehicle on the same insurance policy qualifies for this discount.
  • Seat Belts Save more than Lives – Drivers who require all occupants to use their safety belts could cut 10% or more on the medical payments or PIP coverage costs.
  • Fewer Miles Equal More Savings – Keeping the miles down on your Ford could be rewarded with better rates on cars that stay parked.

A little note about advertised discounts, most discount credits are not given to the entire policy premium. A few only apply to individual premiums such as medical payments or collision. So when it seems like all the discounts add up to a free policy, it doesn’t quite work that way. But any discount will bring down the cost of coverage.

Which policy gives me the best coverage?

When it comes to buying the right insurance coverage, there is no cookie cutter policy. Every situation is different and your policy should reflect that. Here are some questions about coverages that may help highlight if your situation would benefit from professional advice.

  • Does my insurance cover a custom paint job?
  • What discounts do I qualify for?
  • Can I afford low physical damage deductibles?
  • Should I buy full coverage?
  • Does my policy cover my teen driver if they drive my company car?
  • Is other people’s property covered if stolen from my vehicle?
  • When should I buy a commercial auto policy?
  • At what point should I drop full coverage?
  • How can I force my company to pay a claim?
  • What is roadside assistance coverage?

If you can’t answer these questions but one or more may apply to you then you might want to talk to an insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, simply complete this short form or go to this page to view a list of companies.

The coverage is in the details

Learning about specific coverages of your policy helps when choosing which coverages you need at the best deductibles and correct limits. Car insurance terms can be impossible to understand and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Shown next are the usual coverages found on the average car insurance policy.

Liability

Liability insurance will cover damage that occurs to a person or their property that is your fault. This coverage protects you against claims from other people. It does not cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.

Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have limits of 100/300/100 which stand for $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a total of $300,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage for $100,000. Occasionally you may see one number which is a combined single limit which provides one coverage limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.

Liability coverage pays for things like funeral expenses, pain and suffering, medical expenses, court costs and bail bonds. How much liability should you purchase? That is a personal decision, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as much as you can afford.

Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist insurance

This gives you protection when other motorists either are underinsured or have no liability coverage at all. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants as well as your vehicle’s damage.

Due to the fact that many drivers only purchase the least amount of liability that is required, their limits can quickly be used up. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Frequently these coverages are identical to your policy’s liability coverage.

Comprehensive coverage (or Other than Collision)

Comprehensive insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You need to pay your deductible first then the remaining damage will be covered by your comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive can pay for things such as vandalism, falling objects and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The maximum payout your car insurance company will pay is the actual cash value, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s probably time to drop comprehensive insurance.

Coverage for collisions

Collision coverage pays for damage to your Explorer Sport Trac caused by collision with another car or object. You first must pay a deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.

Collision insurance covers things such as sustaining damage from a pot hole, rolling your car, sideswiping another vehicle, colliding with a tree and damaging your car on a curb. This coverage can be expensive, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. You can also choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Insurance for medical payments

Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP reimburse you for short-term medical expenses like X-ray expenses, ambulance fees, chiropractic care, hospital visits and EMT expenses. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance plan or if you are not covered by health insurance. They cover both the driver and occupants and will also cover getting struck while a pedestrian. Personal injury protection coverage is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
