Consumers who are new to the process of comparison shopping may think purchasing low-cost Ford Transit-Connect insurance is hard. The are a couple different ways to compare quotes from local auto insurance companies. The fastest way to find competitive Ford Transit-Connect insurance cost is to perform an online rate comparison. It is quite easy and can be accomplished by completing this short form.

Insurance premiums on a Ford Transit-Connect can vary widely based upon several criteria. Taken into consideration are:

  • Your driving record
  • Credit rating
  • The size of your community
  • The number of annual miles
  • Your gender can raise or lower rates
  • Low deductibles cost more
  • Your vehicle's safety rating
  • Your job
  • Your coverage level
  • Whether you rent or own your home

One important consideration which can affect your rates is the age of the vehicle. Models that are a few years old have a reduced actual cash value compared to new Transit-Connect models so the cost to replace them will push premiums down. On the flip side, newer models have more advanced features like tire pressure monitors, a telematics system, autonomous braking, and adaptive headlights which can give discounted rates.

How does the size and class of the Ford Transit Connect affect liability rates?

What does liability insurance cover? A vital coverage, the law in most states requires drivers to have liability insurance in order to drive. Liability insurance is composed of two coverages:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage will pay for the other driver’s medical bills if you caused the accident.
  • Property damage will pay for the other driver’s vehicle repair costs (or property repairs if you run into something like a fence) if you caused the accident.

The important thing to note is that liability insurance pays for other’s costs if you cause an accident. This is why liability-only insurance plans aren’t the best, as you’ll have to pay for your own vehicle repairs and medical costs after an accident you caused. You also need to make sure you have high liability limits, especially if your car fits into one of the two types below:

  • A large, sturdy car that is known to cause significant damage to other vehicles in crashes.
  • A car that is prone to crashes, such as a fast sports car.

Owners of cars that meet these descriptions will have higher liability rates, as there is a higher chance of insurers having to pay out expensive claims. So what is the size and class of the Ford Transit Connect? It is classified as a midsize van, which means it shouldn’t be a car that inflicts a lot of damage to other vehicles.

However, to make sure, we are going to take a look at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIIH) 2018 data on insurance losses by make and model. This will help us determine if liability rates will be expensive or cheap for the Ford Transit Connect. While the IIHS only has losses for property damage, the property damage losses for all of the Ford Transit Connect versions are decent.

  • Ford Transit Connect cargo LWB: -8 percent (average)
  • Ford Transit Connect cargo SWB: 1 percent (average)
  • Ford Transit Connect LWB: -8 percent (average)

Anything in the negative is good. These losses suggest that the prices for liability insurance shouldn’t be too high for any version of the Ford Transit Connect. To make sure, keep reading to see what average rates are for liability insurance.

What does liability insurance cost for the Ford Transit Connect?

We collected our rate estimates from Geico for a 2019 Transit Connect Van XL. Our sample driver was a 40-year-old male with a clean driving record who owns his vehicle and travels an average of 13,000 miles per year. The first set of rates shows price ranges for different levels of bodily injury liability coverage (for a six-month policy).

  • Low ($15,000/$30,000): $31.75
  • Medium ($100,000/$200,000): $65.08
  • High ($500,000/$500,000): $104.77

If you upgrade from low to high coverage, you will pay an additional $73. This isn’t terrible, as it breaks down to $12 a month. The next set of prices is for property damage liability insurance.

  • Low ($5,000): $395.76
  • Medium ($20,000): $414.28
  • High ($100,000): $427.83

The price to upgrade from low to high property damage liability coverage is lower than the cost for bodily injury liability. The average price is only $32 (or $5 a month). These rates are great, as it means you can upgrade to high coverage for both coverages for only $17 more a month.

What are the safety features and ratings of the Ford Transit Connect?

Safety features are a great way to earn a discount on car insurance. If you aren’t sure what safety features are on the standard models of the Ford Transit Connect, don’t worry. Insurers usually check vehicle models to see what features are on your car.

To make sure insurers don’t miss anything, though, it’s important to make sure that your insurer is aware of all the safety features of your car, including added ones. We went to AutoBlog.com for a list of safety features on the 2021 Ford Transit Connect, and you can use this tool for whatever model year you have.

  • Crash prevention features: anti-lock brakes and stability control.
  • Crash safety features: front-impact airbags, side-impact airbags, overhead airbags, and seatbelt pretensioners.
  • Anti-theft features: ignition disable device.

These are all fairly basic safety features, but upgrading your Ford Transit Connect may result in more extensive safety features, such as forward collision warning or backup cameras.

In addition to safety features, the safety rating of a car can also earn you a discounted premium. However, there are no crash tests performed on the Ford Transit Connect. This means that insurers will look at crash tests for similar vehicles in the same size and class as the Ford Transit Connect.

Insurers may also look at the IIHS’s fatality rates broken up into three vehicle types: cars, pickups, and SUVs. Below are the fatalities per million vehicles for drivers:

  • 48 car fatalities
  • 34 pickup fatalities
  • 23 SUV fatalities

The Ford Connect Transit belongs to the car category, which has the most fatalities for drivers. The car category also has the all occupant fatalities overall, as you can see from the numbers below.

  • 69 car fatalities
  • 42 pickup fatalities
  • 32 SUV fatalities

There are 27 more car fatalities than pickup fatalities per million vehicles. This is a fairly significant gap, and it means that cars may have higher insurance rates. The next set of fatalities shows how car fatalities are spread out by crash type, so you can see which crashes make occupants more vulnerable to fatalities.

  • Frontal Impact: 7,433 fatalities
  • Side Impact: 3,568 fatalities
  • Rear Impact: 834 fatalities
  • Other (mostly rollovers): 1,303 fatalities

The total of car fatalities (13,138) is much higher than the total SUV fatalities (5,035) and pickup fatalities (4,369). However, insurers won’t just automatically give you a higher rate if you own a car. The safety features and ratings of a vehicle have more weight on rates than general fatalities.

What is the MSRP of the Ford Transit Connect?

The manufacturer suggested retail price influences both the price you pay for your car and your insurance rates. How? Sellers will use the MSRP to determine the sticker price (invoice price) of a car, and insurers will use the MSRP to determine the car’s value. A higher MSRP means higher insurance rates and a higher sell price.

However, the MSRP price and sticker price are usually reduced to what is known as the fair purchase price. This price is what others are paying for your vehicle, and you should be paying a similar price. The video below explains the difference between these three prices.

To find out more about prices for the Ford Transit Connect, we went to Kelley Blue Book (KBB) for prices. Take a look at the price ranges below to see how much you should be paying for a 2019 Ford Transit Cargo (the latest model KBB has prices for).

  • MSRP: $26,295
  • Invoice Price: $25,166
  • Fair Market Range: $23,446 to $25,477
  • Fair Purchase Price: $24,462

While the fair market range prices are less than the MSRP, insurers will still use the MSRP to determine insurance rates. Why? The MSRP is a fixed price, whereas the fair market prices vary depending on the area and seller.

So which coverages does the MSRP affect? Since we are talking about the cost of your vehicle, coverages like liability insurance or medical coverage won’t be affected. However, any coverages that deal with repairs or replacement of your car will be affected, such as gap coverage.

The two main coverages that will have rate changes, however, are collision and comprehensive coverages. These two coverages are so important that lenders will often invoke force-placed insurance to make sure leased vehicles have these coverages. Both collision and comprehensive insurance will pay for repairs if you crash your vehicle, although they cover different situations.

  • Collision coverage covers collisions with other vehicles and objects, such as your mailbox or a neighbor’s fence post.
  • Comprehensive coverage covers collisions with animals, as well as damages from weather, vandalism, and theft.

These two coverages are the building blocks of any good car insurance policy, so we do recommend having them in addition to liability insurance. Since the MSRP isn’t extremely high for the Ford Transit Connect, you shouldn’t have a terrible rate. To make sure, however, we want to take a look at the IIHS’s loss data.

To start, let’s look at 2016 to 2018 collision losses for the multiple versions of the Ford Transit Connect.

  • Ford Transit Connect cargo LWB: -25 percent (better than average)
  • Ford Transit Connect cargo SWB: -29 percent (better than average)
  • Ford Transit Connect LWB: -5 percent (average)
  • Ford Transit Connect SWB: 6 percent (average)

None of the losses are below average, which is good. In addition, only one loss number is not negative. Let’s see if the comprehensive losses are as good.

  • Ford Transit Connect cargo LWB: -22 percent (better than average)
  • Ford Transit Connect cargo SWB: -21 percent (better than average)
  • Ford Transit Connect LWB: 13 percent (average)

The comprehensive losses are slightly worse than the collision losses, but they are still decent. Based on these losses, you should have an average rate for collision and comprehensive car insurance.

How much will it cost to repair my Ford Transit Connect?

Paying for car insurance is just one expense of owning a vehicle. You’ll also need to pay for gas, vehicle maintenance, and vehicle repairs. If you don’t calculate these costs correctly, you risk missing payments on your car insurance.

Unfortunately, the Ford Transit Connect only has a three out of five reliability rating on RepairPal.com and poor ownership costs. It costs an average of $926 for vehicle maintenance every year, which is high. Because this average includes regular maintenance like oil repairs, you will be paying these costs yourself.

However, any damages to your vehicle from an accident will be covered by your insurer. Because of this, insurers will be concerned with what repair costs for your vehicle will average. If the average repair costs are high, you can expect to pay more for collision and comprehensive coverages. Since the average maintenance for the Ford Transit Connect is almost $1,000, you may notice slightly higher rates.

Don’t be discouraged by the maintenance costs. By shopping around for rates, you can still find cheap car insurance.
