Nobody I know cherishes buying insurance, especially when they are paying too much.

Companies like Allstate, Liberty Mutual and State Farm all claim big savings with TV and radio ads and it is challenging if not impossible to avoid their marketing magic and do the work needed to find the best deal.

The method we recommend to compare car insurance rates is to understand most of the bigger providers actually pay money for the chance to provide you with a free rate quote. To get started, all you need to do is provide a small amount of information including if you are currently licensed, whether your vehicle is owned or leased, if you require a SR-22, and marital status. That information is then submitted to multiple companies and they return quotes within a short period of time.

Be sure to get all your discounts

Insurance can cost an arm and a leg, but discounts can save money and there are some available to reduce the price significantly. Certain discounts will be applied when you purchase, but lesser-known reductions have to be specially asked for prior to getting the savings.

  • Service Members Pay Less – Being on active duty in the military could be rewarded with lower premiums.
  • Life Insurance Discount – Select insurance companies reward you with better rates if you take out auto and life insurance together.
  • Low Mileage Discounts – Fewer annual miles on your GMC could be rewarded with a substantially lower rate.
  • Good Students Pay Less – Getting good grades can be rewarded with saving of up to 25%. This discount can apply up to age 25.
  • Federal Employees – Employees or retirees of the government can save as much as 8% for Sierra coverage with select insurance companies.
  • Safe Driver Discount – Drivers who avoid accidents can get discounts for up to 45% lower rates for Sierra coverage than less cautious drivers.
  • Multiple Vehicles – Having multiple vehicles on the same car insurance policy could earn a price break for each car.
  • Paperwork-free – A handful of insurance companies may give you up to $50 for buying your policy on their website.
  • 55 and Retired – Mature drivers may be able to get a small decrease in premiums for Sierra coverage.

It’s important to understand that some of the credits will not apply to your bottom line cost. A few only apply to specific coverage prices like comprehensive or collision. So even though it sounds like you can get free auto insurance, companies wouldn’t make money that way. But any discount will reduce the amount you have to pay.

How do I know if I need professional advice?

When it comes to buying coverage, there really is not a cookie cutter policy. Everyone’s needs are different and your policy should reflect that. For instance, these questions may help you determine if your situation might need an agent’s assistance.

  • Does coverage extend to Mexico or Canada?
  • Is my state a no-fault state?
  • Do I need to file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
  • Is a new car covered when I drive it off the dealer lot?
  • Does coverage extend to my business vehicle?
  • Should I buy full coverage?
  • If I drive on a suspended license am I covered?
  • What is roadside assistance coverage?

If you can’t answer these questions but a few of them apply, you might consider talking to a licensed insurance agent. To find an agent in your area, simply complete this short form or you can go here for a list of companies in your area.

Auto insurance coverage considerations

Knowing the specifics of auto insurance aids in choosing the best coverages for your vehicles. The coverage terms in a policy can be ambiguous and even agents have difficulty translating policy wording. Shown next are typical coverages found on the average auto insurance policy.

Liability car insurance – Liability insurance will cover injuries or damage you cause to a person or their property by causing an accident. This coverage protects you against claims from other people, and does not provide coverage for your own vehicle damage or injuries.

Split limit liability has three limits of coverage: bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. Your policy might show limits of 100/300/100 that translate to a $100,000 limit per person for injuries, a total of $300,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage for $100,000. Occasionally you may see one number which is a combined single limit which combines the three limits into one amount with no separate limits for injury or property damage.

Liability can pay for claims such as medical expenses, court costs and bail bonds. How much liability should you purchase? That is a personal decision, but you should buy higher limits if possible.

Collision coverage – This coverage covers damage to your Sierra 1500 resulting from colliding with an object or car. A deductible applies and then insurance will cover the remainder.

Collision can pay for things like sustaining damage from a pot hole, colliding with another moving vehicle, crashing into a building and scraping a guard rail. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider dropping it from vehicles that are 8 years or older. It’s also possible to increase the deductible to bring the cost down.

Medical expense coverage – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance reimburse you for expenses for hospital visits, rehabilitation expenses, pain medications, X-ray expenses and prosthetic devices. They can be used to fill the gap from your health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. Coverage applies to all vehicle occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. Personal injury protection coverage is not an option in every state and may carry a deductible

Uninsured or underinsured coverage – This coverage protects you and your vehicle from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include medical payments for you and your occupants and damage to your GMC Sierra 1500.

Due to the fact that many drivers have only the minimum liability required by law, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Normally your uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages are similar to your liability insurance amounts.

Comprehensive protection – Comprehensive insurance coverage will pay to fix damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You need to pay your deductible first and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.

Comprehensive coverage protects against claims like hitting a deer, vandalism and damage from flooding. The maximum payout you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if the vehicle’s value is low consider dropping full coverage.
