Searching Companies

Did you fall for a flashy sales pitch and buy an underperforming, overpriced insurance coverage policy? Trust us when we tell you you’re not alone. Big companies like State Farm, GEICO and Farmers Insurance constantly blast consumers with ad campaigns and it is challenging if not impossible to not get sucked in by the cute commercials and effectively compare rates to find the best deal.

Auto Insurance Prices Online

Shopping for lower auto insurance rates can be a lot of work if you don’t understand the most efficient way. You could waste a few hours talking about coverages with agents in your area, or you can stay home and use online quoting for quick rates.

Most of the best insurance companies participate in a marketplace that allows shoppers to send in one quote, and each company then returns a price quote based on that information. This prevents consumers from doing quote requests for each company. To compare pricing click to open in new window.

The only downside to getting quotes like this is you cannot specify the insurers to receive prices from. If you prefer to choose specific providers to request quotes from, we have assembled a list of companies who write auto insurance in your area. Click here to view list.

It doesn’t matter which method you choose, just compare the exact same information for each comparison quote. If you are comparing different values for each quote it will be next to impossible to decipher which rate is best.

Tailor your coverage to you

When it comes to choosing proper insurance coverage, there really is no cookie cutter policy. Every insured’s situation is different and your policy should reflect that. For instance, these questions might help in determining whether or not you might need an agent’s assistance.

  • Will filing a claim cost me more?
  • Am I covered when driving on a suspended license?
  • Am I covered by my spouse’s policy after a separation?
  • Am I covered when using my vehicle for business?
  • What can I do if my company won’t pay a claim?
  • What if I total my 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan and owe more than it’s worth?
  • Are split liability limits better than a combined single limit?
  • Can my babysitter drive my car?
  • How high should my medical payments coverage be?
  • Who is covered when they drive my 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan?

If you’re not sure about those questions but one or more may apply to you, you may need to chat with an insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, take a second and complete this form or go to this page to view a list of companies. It’s fast, free and you can get the answers you need.

Car insurance coverage information

Having a good grasp of your car insurance policy can be of help when determining the right coverages and the correct deductibles and limits. The coverage terms in a policy can be impossible to understand and coverage can change by endorsement. These are typical coverage types offered by car insurance companies.

Liability car insurance

Liability coverage can cover damages or injuries you inflict on other’s property or people. This coverage protects you against other people’s claims. It does not cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.

Liability coverage has three limits: per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You might see policy limits of 100/300/100 that translate to $100,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $300,000, and a limit of $100,000 paid for damaged property. Occasionally you may see a combined limit which limits claims to one amount and claims can be made without the split limit restrictions.

Liability can pay for things such as emergency aid, medical expenses and bail bonds. How much liability should you purchase? That is up to you, but buy as much as you can afford.

Coverage for collisions

Collision insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. A deductible applies and then insurance will cover the remainder.

Collision insurance covers things such as colliding with a tree, hitting a parking meter, sideswiping another vehicle and crashing into a building. This coverage can be expensive, so you might think about dropping it from vehicles that are older. You can also increase the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.

Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers

Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other drivers when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. It can pay for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and damage to your Dodge Grand Caravan.

Due to the fact that many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages is very important. Most of the time the UM/UIM limits are similar to your liability insurance amounts.

Comprehensive car insurance

Comprehensive insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage that is not covered by collision coverage. You first must pay your deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive coverage protects against things such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, hail damage, hitting a bird and vandalism. The maximum amount you’ll receive from a claim is the cash value of the vehicle, so if your deductible is as high as the vehicle’s value it’s not worth carrying full coverage.

Coverage for medical expenses

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage provide coverage for short-term medical expenses for things like funeral costs, hospital visits and nursing services. They are often used to fill the gap from your health insurance program or if you do not have health coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover you and your occupants and also covers being hit by a car walking across the street. PIP is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay
