Trying to find cheaper insurance rates for your Ford Explorer? No one in their right mind enjoys paying for insurance, especially knowing they are paying too much.

You have multiple car insurance companies to pick from, and even though it’s nice to have a selection, it can be more difficult to adequately compare rates.

These discounts can slash auto insurance rates

Auto insurance companies don’t always list every available discount very well, so here is a list both the well known and the harder-to-find ways to save on auto insurance.

  • Senior Citizens – Older drivers may receive better auto insurance rates for Explorer insurance.
  • Pay Now and Pay Less – If you pay your bill all at once instead of making monthly payments you could save up to 5%.
  • Federal Government Employee – Being employed by or retired from a federal job can earn a discount up to 10% for Explorer insurance with certain companies.
  • No Charge for an Accident – A few companies will allow you to have one accident before hitting you with a surcharge as long as you don’t have any claims prior to the accident.
  • Use Seat Belts – Using a seat belt and requiring all passengers to use their safety belts can save up to 15% on the medical payments or PIP coverage costs.

Drivers should understand that some of the credits will not apply to the overall cost of the policy. Most only apply to the cost of specific coverages such as collision or personal injury protection. Just because you may think you can get free auto insurance, auto insurance companies aren’t that generous.

When might I need the advice of an agent?

When buying coverage for your personal vehicles, there is no one size fits all plan. Everyone’s needs are different so this has to be addressed. For example, these questions might help in determining whether or not you might need an agent’s assistance.

  • Why do I only qualify for high-risk insurance?
  • Why is insurance for a teen driver so high?
  • Can I pay claims out-of-pocket if I buy high deductibles?
  • Am I covered when pulling a rental trailer?
  • Is my 2013 Ford Explorer covered for flood damage?
  • How do I buy GAP insurance?
  • Can my babysitter drive my car?
  • How high should deductibles be on a 2013 Ford Explorer?

If you’re not sure about those questions, you may need to chat with an insurance agent. If you don’t have a local agent, fill out this quick form or go to this page to view a list of companies.

Detailed coverages of your car insurance policy

Having a good grasp of your policy helps when choosing appropriate coverage for your vehicles. The coverage terms in a policy can be difficult to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Listed below are typical coverage types found on the average car insurance policy.

Medical expense coverage – Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and medical payments coverage pay for short-term medical expenses like chiropractic care, X-ray expenses, funeral costs, EMT expenses and nursing services. The coverages can be used in conjunction with a health insurance policy or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover you and your occupants in addition to being hit by a car walking across the street. Personal Injury Protection is not available in all states but can be used in place of medical payments coverage

Uninsured or underinsured coverage – Your UM/UIM coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. Covered claims include hospital bills for your injuries and damage to your Ford Explorer.

Due to the fact that many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. This is the reason having UM/UIM coverage should not be overlooked.

Auto liability – Liability coverage can cover damage or injury you incur to a person or their property that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU against claims from other people. It does not cover damage sustained by your vehicle in an accident.

Coverage consists of three different limits, per person bodily injury, per accident bodily injury, and a property damage limit. You commonly see policy limits of 25/50/25 that translate to $25,000 bodily injury coverage, a per accident bodily injury limit of $50,000, and a limit of $25,000 paid for damaged property.

Liability insurance covers claims like court costs, legal defense fees, loss of income and funeral expenses. How much coverage you buy is up to you, but consider buying as much as you can afford.

Comprehensive protection – This coverage pays for damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.

Comprehensive coverage protects against things like a tree branch falling on your vehicle, hail damage, vandalism and damage from a tornado or hurricane. The maximum payout your car insurance company will pay is the cash value of the vehicle, so if it’s not worth much more than your deductible consider dropping full coverage.

Collision coverage – This coverage covers damage to your Explorer from colliding with an object or car. You will need to pay your deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.

Collision can pay for things such as colliding with another moving vehicle, driving through your garage door and backing into a parked car. This coverage can be expensive, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from lower value vehicles. It’s also possible to bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.

And the best car insurance company is…

Affordable 2013 Ford Explorer insurance is possible online and also from your neighborhood agents, and you should be comparing both to have the best chance of lowering rates. Some insurance companies may not provide you the ability to get quotes online and many times these small insurance companies only sell through independent insurance agents.

We’ve covered some good ideas how you can get a better price on insurance. The key concept to understand is the more rate comparisons you have, the higher your chance of finding lower rates. Drivers may discover the biggest savings come from an unexpected company. Smaller companies may only write in your state and offer lower rates compared to the large companies like State Farm, GEICO and Nationwide.
