Insurance can be prohibitively expensive, buy you may qualify for discounts that can drop the cost substantially. Some discounts apply automatically at the time of quoting, but a few must be manually applied before you get the savings. If they aren’t giving you every credit possible, you are paying more than you should be.

  • No Charge for an Accident – A handful of insurance companies will allow you to have one accident before hitting you with a surcharge as long as you don’t have any claims for a set time period.
  • Discount for Swiching Early – Select companies give a discount for signing up prior to your current policy expiring. The savings is around 10%.

Coverage specifics

Understanding the coverages of auto insurance can be of help when determining which coverages you need and proper limits and deductibles. Policy terminology can be difficult to understand and nobody wants to actually read their policy. Shown next are the normal coverages available from auto insurance companies.

Medical costs insurance – Coverage for medical payments and/or PIP provide coverage for short-term medical expenses like dental work, X-ray expenses, rehabilitation expenses and EMT expenses. They are often used in conjunction with a health insurance program or if you lack health insurance entirely. They cover you and your occupants in addition to getting struck while a pedestrian. PIP is not available in all states and gives slightly broader coverage than med pay

Comprehensive or Other Than Collision – Comprehensive insurance coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive can pay for claims such as hail damage, hitting a bird, damage from a tornado or hurricane and falling objects. The highest amount your auto insurance company will pay is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s not worth carrying full coverage.

Auto liability – Liability coverage provides protection from damage or injury you incur to other people or property in an accident. This insurance protects YOU from legal claims by others, and does not provide coverage for your injuries or vehicle damage.

It consists of three limits, bodily injury for each person, bodily injury for the entire accident, and a limit for property damage. As an example, you may have policy limits of 50/100/50 that translate to a $50,000 limit per person for injuries, a limit of $100,000 in injury protection per accident, and a limit of $50,000 paid for damaged property. Another option is a combined single limit or CSL that pays claims from the same limit without having the split limit caps.

Liability coverage protects against claims like attorney fees, repair bills for other people’s vehicles and funeral expenses. How much coverage you buy is your choice, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase higher limits if possible.

Collision – Collision coverage will pay to fix damage to your C-Class caused by collision with another vehicle or an object, but not an animal. A deductible applies then your collision coverage will kick in.

Collision can pay for claims like crashing into a ditch, rolling your car, scraping a guard rail, damaging your car on a curb and backing into a parked car. Paying for collision coverage can be pricey, so you might think about dropping it from vehicles that are 8 years or older. It’s also possible to increase the deductible to get cheaper collision coverage.

UM/UIM Coverage – This coverage provides protection from other drivers when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. This coverage pays for injuries to you and your family and damage to your Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Since many drivers carry very low liability coverage limits, it only takes a small accident to exceed their coverage. That’s why carrying high Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage is important protection for you and your family. Normally these limits are similar to your liability insurance amounts.

Feed the piggy bank

As you shop your coverage around, it’s not a good idea to skimp on coverage in order to save money. In many cases, consumers will sacrifice liability coverage limits only to find out that it was a big mistake. Your strategy should be to purchase plenty of coverage for the lowest price while still protecting your assets.

We just presented many ideas to shop for 2013 Mercedes-Benz C-Class insurance online. The key thing to remember is the more providers you compare, the higher the chance of saving money. You may even find the lowest rates come from a small local company. Smaller companies can often insure niche markets at a lower cost than their larger competitors like State Farm, GEICO and Nationwide.
