If online insurance comparisons are new to you, it’s easy to be confused by the large number of online companies vying for business.

Compare the Market for Auto Insurance

There are a lot of ways to compare auto insurance prices but one way is less labor-intensive and much quicker. You can spend your afternoon talking about coverages with agents in your area, or you can stay home and use online quoting to get rates in a matter of minutes.

Most car insurance companies participate in a marketplace where insurance shoppers complete one form, and every company can provide price quotes. This prevents consumers from doing quotation requests for every auto insurance company. To find out how much you can save on auto insurance click here to start a free quote.

The single downside to comparing rates this way is you cannot specify the insurers you want to price. If you would rather choose specific providers for rate comparison, we have a listing of companies who write auto insurance in your area.

Whichever way you use, double check that you are using identical information on every quote. If the quotes have mixed coverages it will be next to impossible to determine which rate is truly the best. Quoting even small variations in limits can mean a large discrepancy in price. And when comparing auto insurance rates, know that having more price comparisons will increase your chances of finding a lower rate.

These discounts can lower your rates

The price of auto insurance can be rather high, but discounts can save money and there are some available that you may not even be aware of. Most are applied when you purchase, but less common discounts must be asked for prior to receiving the credit.

  • Pay Upfront and Save – If you pay your entire premium ahead of time instead of paying each month you may reduce your total bill.
  • Safety Course Discount – Successfully completing a driver safety course could save 5% or more depending on where you live.
  • Sign Online – A handful of insurance companies may give you up to $50 just for signing your application online.
  • New Car Discount – Putting insurance coverage on a new car can cost up to 25% less due to better safety requirements for new cars.
  • Student in College – Youth drivers who live away from home and do not have a car may be able to be covered for less.
  • Organization Discounts – Belonging to certain professional organizations could trigger savings when buying car insurance on Civic coverage.
  • Own a Home – Owning a home can save you money because maintaining a house is proof that your finances are in order.
  • Anti-theft Discount – Vehicles with anti-theft systems help deter theft and will save you 10% or more.
  • Seat Belt Usage – Drivers who require all occupants to buckle their seat belts could save 15% off your medical payments premium.

Drivers should understand that most of the big mark downs will not be given to the entire policy premium. Some only reduce the cost of specific coverages such as medical payments or collision. Just because it seems like you can get free auto insurance, you won’t be that lucky. Any amount of discount will cut the cost of coverage.

Insurance companies who might offer these discounts include:

  • State Farm
  • Nationwide
  • GEICO
  • AAA
  • 21st Century
  • The Hartford

Check with every prospective company which discounts you may be entitled to. All car insurance discounts might not be offered in your state.

Different people need different coverages

When it comes to choosing adequate coverage, there isn’t really a single plan that fits everyone. Everyone’s situation is unique.

For instance, these questions could help you determine whether or not you may require specific advice.

  • When can my company non-renew my policy?
  • Do I need to file an SR-22 for a DUI in my state?
  • Do I need rental car coverage?
  • Where can I find high-risk insurance?
  • Can I afford to pay high deductible claims out of pocket?
  • Am I covered when renting a car or should I buy coverage from the car rental agency?
  • Do I have coverage if my license is suspended?
  • When do I need to add a new car to my policy?

If it’s difficult to answer those questions, you may need to chat with a licensed agent. To find an agent in your area, take a second and complete this form.

Educate yourself about insurance coverages

Learning about specific coverages of a insurance policy helps when choosing the right coverages for your vehicles. The coverage terms in a policy can be ambiguous and coverage can change by endorsement.

Coverage for medical expenses – Med pay and PIP coverage provide coverage for expenses for hospital visits, funeral costs, EMT expenses and X-ray expenses. The coverages can be used to cover expenses not covered by your health insurance plan or if there is no health insurance coverage. Coverage applies to all vehicle occupants in addition to if you are hit as a while walking down the street. PIP is not an option in every state but can be used in place of medical payments coverage

Comprehensive insurance – Comprehensive insurance covers damage caused by mother nature, theft, vandalism and other events. You first must pay your deductible and then insurance will cover the rest of the damage.

Comprehensive insurance covers claims such as damage from a tornado or hurricane, a broken windshield, falling objects and damage from flooding. The highest amount your insurance company will pay is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much consider dropping full coverage.

Coverage for uninsured or underinsured drivers – This coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants from other motorists when they are uninsured or don’t have enough coverage. This coverage pays for medical payments for you and your occupants and damage to your Honda Civic.

Because many people only carry the minimum required liability limits, their liability coverage can quickly be exhausted. So UM/UIM coverage is important protection for you and your family. Normally the UM/UIM limits are similar to your liability insurance amounts.

Liability coverages – This protects you from damage that occurs to other’s property or people that is your fault. This insurance protects YOU against claims from other people. It does not cover your own vehicle damage or injuries.

Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury for each person injured, bodily injury for the entire accident and a property damage limit. As an example, you may have liability limits of 50/100/50 that translate to $50,000 bodily injury coverage, $100,000 for the entire accident, and a total limit of $50,000 for damage to vehicles and property. Another option is one limit called combined single limit (CSL) which provides one coverage limit with no separate limits for injury or property damage.

Liability insurance covers things like funeral expenses, loss of income and repair bills for other people’s vehicles. How much coverage you buy is a personal decision, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as much as you can afford.

Collision coverage – Collision coverage pays to fix your vehicle from damage resulting from colliding with a stationary object or other vehicle. You will need to pay your deductible and the rest of the damage will be paid by collision coverage.

Collision coverage protects against claims such as backing into a parked car, colliding with a tree and sustaining damage from a pot hole. Collision coverage makes up a good portion of your premium, so analyze the benefit of dropping coverage from vehicles that are 8 years or older. Drivers also have the option to bump up the deductible in order to get cheaper collision rates.
