  • Am I covered if I wreck a rental car?
  • Will I be non-renewed for getting a DUI or other conviction?
  • What is an SR-22 filing?
  • Should I buy full coverage?
  • Is my cargo covered for damage or theft?
  • Exactly who is provided coverage by my policy?
  • Can my teen driver be rated on a liability-only vehicle?
  • Is my nanny covered when driving my vehicle?
  • Should I drop comprehensive coverage on older vehicles?

Insurance policy coverages for a Nissan Sentra

Understanding the coverages of your policy can be of help when determining the best coverages for your vehicles. The terms used in a policy can be difficult to understand and reading a policy is terribly boring. Shown next are the normal coverages found on the average insurance policy.

Comprehensive (Other than Collision) – Comprehensive insurance pays to fix your vehicle from damage from a wide range of events other than collision. You need to pay your deductible first and the remainder of the damage will be paid by comprehensive coverage.

Comprehensive insurance covers claims such as a broken windshield, hitting a deer, damage from getting keyed, rock chips in glass and damage from flooding. The maximum amount your insurance company will pay is the ACV or actual cash value, so if the vehicle is not worth much it’s not worth carrying full coverage.

Liability auto insurance – This provides protection from injuries or damage you cause to people or other property that is your fault. It protects you against claims from other people. Liability doesn’t cover damage to your own property or vehicle.

Coverage consists of three different limits, bodily injury per person, bodily injury per accident and property damage. As an example, you may have liability limits of 100/300/100 that means you have a limit of $100,000 per injured person, a limit of $300,000 in injury protection per accident, and a total limit of $100,000 for damage to vehicles and property.

Liability coverage pays for claims such as pain and suffering, medical expenses and repair costs for stationary objects. The amount of liability coverage you purchase is a decision to put some thought into, but it’s cheap coverage so purchase as large an amount as possible.

Protection from uninsured/underinsured drivers – Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist coverage protects you and your vehicle’s occupants when other motorists either have no liability insurance or not enough. This coverage pays for injuries sustained by your vehicle’s occupants and also any damage incurred to your 1996 Nissan Sentra.

Due to the fact that many drivers only carry the minimum required liability limits, it doesn’t take a major accident to exceed their coverage limits. For this reason, having high UM/UIM coverages should not be overlooked.

Collision coverage – This pays to fix your vehicle from damage caused by collision with a stationary object or other vehicle. You first must pay a deductible then the remaining damage will be paid by your insurance company.

Collision coverage pays for things like colliding with another moving vehicle, sustaining damage from a pot hole, damaging your car on a curb, hitting a mailbox and hitting a parking meter. Collision is rather expensive coverage, so consider removing coverage from vehicles that are older. Another option is to choose a higher deductible to save money on collision insurance.

Medical expense insurance – Medical payments and Personal Injury Protection insurance kick in for immediate expenses for things like hospital visits, doctor visits and chiropractic care. They are utilized in addition to your health insurance program or if there is no health insurance coverage. Medical payments and PIP cover not only the driver but also the vehicle occupants in addition to any family member struck as a pedestrian. PIP coverage is not universally available but it provides additional coverages not offered by medical payments coverage
